Monroe man faces a slew of charges after fleeing from police

Monroe Police Department reported the arrest of Christopher Wheat, 30, of Monroe after he wrecked his vehicle while attempting to flee from officers.

According to a release from Lt. Tracy Hanson of MPS, at about 4:45 p.m. yesterday, Oct. 22, officers received information that Wheat, who was wanted for theft by receiving, was in the area of Tanglewood and the Valero gas station on North Broad Street. There was a warrant for his arrest. When a traffic stop was attempted on Wheat on N. Broad Street, near the WOW Express car wash, he fled down North Broad Street, Oak Street, Booth Drive and Sorrells street before crashing into the curb as he attempted to turn onto Rose Ison Terrace. According to the police report, the officer chasing him in the police vehicle collided with Wheat’s car. The suspect then fled on foot but was arrested about a block away. He allegedly resisted arrest and was tased in order to subdue him.

Wheat is charged with fleeing/attempting to elude police, driving while unlicensed, failure to maintain lane, leaving the scene of an accident, striking a fixed object, failure to yield while turning left, failure to stop at a stop sign, speeding, possession of cocaine, obstruction of law enforcement officers, and on the original warrant for theft by receiving.
