Firefighters from Walton County Fire Rescue and the City of Monroe were honored at the Walton County Board of Commissioners meeting Tuesday night for their contributions to fighting wildfires in northeast Georgia late last year.

When wildfires burned thousands of acres in north Georgia and North and South Carolina in November last year, WCFR and MFD sent crews to help protect buildings and set backfires as the local firefighters tried to contain the wildfires. Some of the local firefighters returned for more than one rotation until the local firefighters finally got the fires under control. The drought made for dangerous fire conditions that helped fuel the fires.
