Walton County Sheriff’s Deputies are still busy working through stolen property that was discovered at a chop shop Monday following a six-month investigation. Denny Maurice Latimore was arrested after property at 2470 Youth Monroe Road was raided. He is currently being held in Walton County Detention Center charged with operating a chop shop. Officials say more arrests are expected.

According to Sgt. Damien Mercer with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division, once the property from this location has been catalogued, it is expected to be valued at somewhere in the region of $150,000 to $200,000. Officials then hope to match up as much of it as possible with people who have reported their property stolen.

“It is going to take a little longer than we first thought though because of the sheer volume,” Mercer said. “Once we have a list, we will be contacting people whose property has been recovered.”

Mercer said they will match up serial numbers of items recovered with those of items reported stolen where they can. Officials caution, however, that many of the recovered items are from outside of Walton County.

“We’ve got stuff stolen from Walton, Gwinnett, Dekalb, Athens, Clark County, Newton, Rockdale and as far away as Knoxville, Tennessee,” Mercer said. “The lawn mower we have is from Knoxville, Tennessee. We do have some weed eaters stolen from a local church and some from a landscaping company down on Norcross Lane, but we haven’t yet had time to contact any of the victims.”

Mercer said if anyone filed a report that included serial numbers, the information would have been filed with the Georgia Crime Information Center and could be matched with recovered items. Many of the items, however, are in pieces. Heavy equipment was brought in to dig up pieces that were buried in the back yard.

“We have eight F250 or 350 trucks – a mix of both – and we have a 1984 Chevrolet truck, that is drivable, that was pierced together,” Mercer said. “We have a Bobcat TL 180, which is a skid-steer loader. From Harbor Freight we have brand new four jacks in a box, welding leads and for Esco Industrial out of Athens we recovered three of those big job boxes that they put all of their welding equipment into.”

Mercer said the vehicles were stolen from all over the metro area. Some were  chopped up and VIN numbers removed to enable some of the stolen vehicles to be sold with “clean” tags.

“So basically you have two victims,” he said. “The person who had the vehicle stolen and then the person who purchased what he thought was a good deal.”

Monroe Police Department report that two youths were arrested Saturday and charged with burglary, auto theft, reckless driving and obstructing a law enforcement officer following a forced entry incident that happened on South Madison in the early morning hours of Dec. 13. The victims were asleep in bed at the time.

According to a report from MPD, the resident arrived home at about 2:30 a.m. to find her back door kicked in and her sister’s car missing from the driveway. Her sister and boyfriend were at home in bed at the time. Police were called and while they were on site investigating the incident, other officers located the vehicle in the area of Waffle House on Spring Street. Officers attempted to make a traffic stop on the stolen vehicle, but the youths fled, resulting in a pursuit through the parking lot of Tractor Supply. When the driver of the stolen vehicle attempted to enter Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, the vehicle was struck by another vehicle. Both suspect fled from the accident, but one was apprehended after a short foot chase and the second suspect was later picked up. Both were transported to the Regional Youth Detection Center.

According to Monroe Police Chief Keith Glass, both cases have been adjudicated. Due to the fact that both suspects were juveniles, their names have not been released by authorities.

“You know these kids are committing crimes, like they think it is a game, but eventually they’re going to pick the wrong house and what they may consider a game may instead be a matter of life and death,” Glass said.

According to the report, a wallet was also stolen during the burglary.

MPD arrest another youth in the process of breaking into a home

Just two days after two juveniles were arrested after breaking into a home and then leaving in the resident’s vehicle, another juvenile has been arrested after being caught breaking into a home in Monroe.

According to the police report, a resident on Booth Street contacted the Monroe Police Department at about 7:43 p.m. on Dec. 15, 2015 to report that he believed someone was trying to break into his neighbor’s home. He heard loud banging “like someone was trying to kick the back door in.” Police arrived and detained a juvenile who had screwdrivers in his hand and was wearing a glove. The key hole on the back door of the property had been damaged and there were marks indicating that the door had been kicked several times.

The juvenile, whose name is being withheld by authorities due to his age, is charged with possession of tools for commission of a crime, criminal attempt and criminal trespass. According to authorities, he still has to appear in front of a judge to face these charges.

In referring to this and the incident on Dec. 13, Monroe Police Chief Keith Glass said that by arresting these youths, officers could well be saving their lives.

“This young man, like the two young men arrested early Sunday morning, have been committing criminal acts that put our citizens in danger, as well as themselves,” Glass said. “They have been playing Russia Roulette in the sense that sooner are later they would enter a home placing the resident in fear of their life or grave body harm, causing the victim to use force to protect themselves.  The work of our Officers will clear up numerous cases, and just maybe saved these kid’s lives.”
