Covington Police looking into missing person cases after discovery of skeletal remains

The Covington Police Department is looking into missing person cases after a surveyor located skeletal remains off City Pond Road in Covington Monday afternoon.

“We don’t have any missing persons at or near that area recently, but we are looking at an older case where there was someone who was wanted,” said Capt. Ken Malcom with CPD. “We are looking into any and all missing person cases though so I don’t want to name any specific case.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigations is currently attempting to make an identification from the remains. Malcolm said clothes found at the scene indicate the body is that of a man. He said it did look like an old scene.

“There has been no identification found. We are going to have to let the resources with the GBI and science help us,” Malcom said. “There also was a firearm located there, but it is corroded and rusted and we will again have to use the resources with the GBI to obtain serial numbers. Trauma to the skull found would be consistent with a gunshot wound.”

Malcolm said it is believed that the rains possibly resulted in the exposure of portions of the skeleton.

“The surveyor just walked up on it,” Malcom said. “It is actually not all that rare for someone working, or a deer hunter in the woods, to discover something like this years later.”

Late this summer, the Walton County Sheriff’s Office and several other agencies conducted a search for the remains of missing Snellville teen Justin Gaines, 18, based on a tip from a local inmate. The search did not turn up anything.  Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman believes that several Walton County residents were involved in the disappearance of Gaines. However, there is no indication that there is any connection to the remains found in Covington on Monday. Chapman said Monday he did not have information on the remains that were found in Covington.
